Furthermore, cleaning bricks is super easy, and they don’t lose color easily. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it?

The world of architecture and designing is vast and fascinating. So, let’s hop into the world of brick paving!

Advantages of Brick Paving

Australians love bricks, and it is one of the most common paving materials used in the country. There are many benefits associated with using brick for your patio or path.

Let us get to know more about this amazing element.

Strong and Durable

Brick is undoubtedly the strongest construction material out there. Anything made of brick needs a lot of power to destroy.

Because of its Herculean attributes, brick is generally used in pedestrian footpaths, urban construction projects, and driveways. It can withhold pretty much anything.

Fast Installation

Unlike other exotic materials, brick is very easy to install, and it takes very little time to set up. Brick has been used for construction from a very long time ago, hence workers are more apt at paving this material.

So, if you are in a hurry to assemble your patio, choose brick.

Accommodates with the Soil Better

Brick can adjust to the ground it has been placed on easier than other types of material, like concrete. It is true even during earthquakes. Other furniture may scatter around, but the brick will retain its form.

Furthermore, since it can accommodate the ground effortlessly, it is immune to any disturbances on the surface. Hence, it maintains the paving pattern despite the commotion.

Prevents Accidents from Slipping

Accidents can happen on wet surfaces. Hence, tiles and concrete are dangerous to have around swimming pools or on rainy days.

Therefore, we recommend placing brick paving in the patio, backyard and around swimming pools to prevent unwanted accidents. Brick has abrasive properties, so it also dries very quickly after rain.

Strong Color

Now, who is not familiar with the vibrant, red hue of brick patterns? Indeed, it is eye-catching.

Bricks can retain their original color for a very long time, despite constant exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun, extreme cold, and harsh storms.

How to Lay Brick Paving

Brick paving is one of the easiest, cheapest, and most common paving methods. If you have the right skills, expertise, and instruments, you can pave your patio yourself. If not, check out Pavers Adelaide for professional help.

Anyway, let’s understand how brick paving is conducted through a  step-by-step process.

Tools for Brick Paving

You don’t really need sophisticated tools to pave your patio. Think about the Egyptians and how they built a gigantic pyramid that lasted for decades. They didn’t have sophisticated tools either.

In order to pave your patio with bricks, you will need the following tools:

  • A wheelbarrow
  • A mallet
  • A tape measure
  • A shovel
  • Screed rails
  • String Line
  • Pegs
  • A broom
  • A vibrating plate compactor

You will also need:

  • Sand (preferably, kiln-dried sand)
  • Block paving stones
  • Sub-base aggregate

Step-by-step Guide to Lay Bricks

Use the string line and pegs to mark out the area where you want to lay bricks. Use the tape measure to make sure the measurements are right.

Additionally, you need to have a sketch of the final look of the patio before you start. It is always best to consult with professionals in doing these sorts of things.

Dig the Area

Dig the ground for about 155mm with a shovel. You can also use a spade.

Besides, you don’t have to do everything alone. Take help from others while you excavate. If your patio is large, you can use a mini-excavator or a JCB machine.

Make sure the edges are cut clean and the bricks sit perfectly. You can hammer the curbs with a mallet to ensure evenness.

Build the Foundation

Pour a mix of cement and ballast as thick as 100mm to lay the foundation. This mixture should contain six parts ballast and one part cement.

On top of that, mix the sub-base aggregate to ensure that the bricks can support the weight of all objects above it. The aggregate may contain granite limestone and crushed basalt.

Next, moisten the sand enough to be able to make a ball with your hand. Make a 50mm layer with the sand by pouring it on top of the sub-base aggregate.

Now, in order to smoothen the surface and level it everywhere, use a vibrating plate compactor. You can use anything to level the ground, but the machine can do the job better and more quickly.

Afterward, finish up by sprinkling some dry sand over the surface.

Lay the Bricks

Finally, lay the bricks one by one, starting from the edge. In the end, you might have a few bricks that need to be cut to fit into place.

In that case, measure and mark the area that needs to be cut, and placed the chopped bricks onto the patio.

To finish off, sprinkle more dry sand on the gaps and brush them gently with a broom. Give it time to settle. Also, make sure everything is perfect.

To Sum Up

It is actually not that easy to pave the patio. It takes a lot of aptitude and experience to be able to create a brick-paved patio.

However, help is always nearby. You can contact any of your local pavers to get all the help that you need. Additionally, since now you know the general instructions behind paving bricks, you will be able to guide the pavers when they are at work in your patio.

All in all, brick is essentially the most affordable and beautiful material to use when designing a home.

So, when you are planning to design or redesign your patio with bricks, make sure the furniture is able to bring out their rich hue.
