Choosing the right size for any shoe is important. Not only do shoes show off part of your personality, but also dictate your comfort throughout the day.
Having a shoe that’s too small is uncomfortable, squeezes your feet, and can even create long-term damage for your toes. On the other hand, though, having shoes that are too big can cause discomfort and make walking difficult.
Out of all types of footwear, we believe that sandals are the easiest ones to get fitted for, for a few reasons. Mainly, it’s because you can easily see the fit and see which areas need to be adjusted. Here are four easy steps for figuring out which size works for you:
- Measure your feet
This may seem obvious, however, not everyone does it. While measuring your feet doesn’t always give you the most accurate measurement, it’s a good starting point. Not only does it tell you the length of your foot, but also could let you know if you have a narrow or wide foot, which makes a huge difference when it comes to choosing sandals.
- Try on multiple sizes and brands
Every brand is different, which makes every shoe different. It’s the same as buying jeans or shirts at the store. Even within the same company, pairs aren’t made the same, so it’s important to try them on while you’re at the store. Some run big, small, wide, or narrow, so be sure to grab a variety of brands and some sizes close to what you just measured.
- Don’t let style make the decision for you
Again, this seems like a no-brainer, however, when choosing between style and comfort, most people tend to choose style. Like mentioned before, shoes show off part of your personality, so you can’t blame someone for wanting to choose a pair of elegant black slides over boring brown ones. In this case, I would recommend doing some research to find brands that don’t sacrifice one for the other. One particular brand is us, Freedom Moses. We have a wide variety of colors and patterns, while still providing a great fit and maximum comfort.
4. Check the toes
Once you think you have found the perfect fit, there is a trick we always recommend for double-checking the shoe’s (or sandal’s) fit. The ideal fit is always having about a thumbnail’s length between your big toe and the end of the shoe. With this little bit of extra room, you can prevent your feet from being too confined in the shoe, and possibly hitting the front edge. Additionally, it gives your feet some leeway in the summer months, when swelling is common.
While these rules aren’t set in stone, they are very helpful when it comes to choosing the perfect pair of sandals for any occasion.
Another recommendation we have for choosing well-fitting sandals is to purchase some with foot ridges. These ridges help your foot form to the sandal, thus giving them a better grip on the sole. These are helpful for any kind of sandal; whether it’s a thong or a slide, they help with both comfort and fit.
