We can all recall our moms telling us, you got to eat your breakfast if you want to have energy and be able to concentrate in school. Is it just an old wives tale, or it there something more to it?
Now, for the record, breakfast actually is the most important meal of the day. Research shows that those who eat a balanced breakfast have lower levels of “bad” cholesterol, lower chances of getting diabetes and reduce their chances of obesity, amongst a host of other benefits.
You’d think that will all these great benefits everyone would make sure to sit down and eat a healthy breakfast. Surprisingly, more than half of Americans skip breakfast at least once a week, among them a large number of students. The question is why; why would someone miss this crucial opportunity to start their day out right and keep them healthier overall?
The simple answer to this is, we are all so busy. Ask the average person what their life is like, and one thing you will hear from an overwhelming majority of them is that life is extremely hectic and they feel like they don’t have a minute to breath. People are juggling a lot on their plates; often performing the role of mother, breadwinner, friend, and a host of other job titles. For example, if you are a nurse clad in Infinity scrubs you have to either leave home early in the morning to start your hospital shift, or come home in the morning totally exhausted, and just collapse in bed instead of sitting down to eat a nutritious breakfast.
The mornings are just busy times in most homes, and eating a proper breakfast takes time to prepare, time that we often don’t have. But, there is hope in making your mom happy by eating your breakfast, as well as getting to that meeting on time. There are so many convenient grab and go breakfast options these days; there is sure to be one that you will enjoy.
Here are a few easy, healthy breakfast ides that take minimal prep time:
Yogurt with fruit
Hard Boil Egg With Toast- prepare eggs the night before and refrigerate
Quinoa fruit salad- delicious and can be prepared in advance and left in a container in the fridge for a quick grab and go.
Breakfast Bar- with breakfast bars you have to be careful and make sure they are truly healthy. Many times a breakfast bar is a glorified chocolate bar, loaded with calories and junk with minimal nutritional value. Look for bars that are packed with protein and fiber, so they should keep you feeling satisfied.
Once you start eating a healthy breakfast you will feel the difference in your energy level, concentration ability, and you will find yourself snacking less since you will be kept full from your morning meal.
With a bit of planning and foresight, eating that healthy breakfast should be easy, and delicious too!
