Decorating a room in your home from scratch is a fun and rewarding experience. Whether you’re planning on redecorating your living room, bedroom or kitchen, follow these DIY designing tips to give it a chic feel.

Change the Walls

Whether you use paint or wallpaper, changing the look of the walls is one of the easiest ways to change the look of a room. It instantly gives the room a fresh look, changes the mood and sets a backdrop for your other items.

Simplify the Room

A space that’s overaccessorized or cluttered often looks disorganized and messy rather than chic. Spend some time paring down your things and only keep pieces that evoke fond memories or have sentimental value. A simplified space allows the remaining pieces to really stand out.

Create a Focal Point

Choose a large wall to design a focal point and hang some oversized art. Whether you design your own using wall mural decals or find a large piece of art that speaks to you, a chic look is easily achieved.

Camouflage Eyesores

Everyone likes to watch television from time to time but a huge TV placed in the middle of a wall can quickly bring down the feeling of sophistication and luxury. Create a gallery wall around it using fancy mirrors or an arrangement of your favorite art and photographs. While this won’t completely hide it, the TV’s frame will blend with the other items and distract the eye.

Use Interesting Textiles

Cover seat cushions and upholstered stools with antique or vintage fabrics. You can also make throw pillows for couches and chairs. The fabric will bring a unique element to the room and help to personalize the space.

Include an Older Piece

Incorporating an older piece with some patina to it will give the space an air of wisdom. It doesn’t have to be anything huge, an accessory, small side table or mirror will work perfectly.

Add a Sculptural Piece

Rooms are typically square and furniture is often angular, so include something with a unique silhouette or an interesting shape. Some good ideas include a uniquely shaped side chair or coffee table with tree roots for legs. Regardless of what you choose, it will add an unexpected component to the area and feel like a piece of artwork.

Use a Mixture of Textures

A thoughtfully layered mix of textures and materials will give the space a custom, luxurious look. Mix glass, metal, wood and leather items with a variety of textures to create a space that’s chic and inviting.

Add Some Greenery

One of the best ways to bring a room to life is to add some plants. Either head to the local nursery or see if a friend, family member or neighbor will take cuttings from one of their plants to give you. Then find a tasteful vase or plant pot to keep it in.

Display Some Books

Books have their own type of beauty, and if you’re an avid reader having them close at hand is a bonus. Add a pile of your favorite ones to the room to introduce some more color and fill an empty space. Place a pile in a clean place if you don’t use it, on the coffee table, or place them tastefully in the corner of the room.
