Designing a Room that is Easy to Keep Warm

When redecorating very few of us give much thought to how the changes we are making will affect how easy it is to keep the room at a comfortable temperature. Naturally, our focus is on how the room will look, so we sometimes forget the practicalities like how you are going to keep it warm, or cool it down.

Sometimes you get away with this oversight, other times you pay dearly for that oversight, and end up with a room that is often too cold in the winter, or too hot in summer. Fortunately, it does not take much to address the issue, and incorporate what you need into the room the next time you redecorate.

Heat sources

Each room needs a heat source or sources that are capable of heating the entire space. By far the best approach is to install a central heating system. Provided you buy wisely, you will only have to do this once. The fact that home heating oil prices have fallen recently means that right now you can heat the average home for less.

If you do not have the cash to install a full central heating system, you still need to install a heating source in each room. That could be a wood burner, a couple of electric heaters or something else. Regardless of what you choose, it is important to make sure that it is powerful enough to heat the space.

Tight fitting doors and windows

There really is nothing worse than sitting in a draught. When you replace the doors or windows in a room, you need to make sure that they fit as snugly as possible. If you are installing a set of French doors, it is always wise to save up the extra cash you need to buy double glazed units.

Good window coverings

It is also very important to use good quality window coverings. Doing so will make a big difference to how much heat stays in the room during the winter. In the summer, you will also be able to draw the curtains, blinds or shutters to help to keep the room cooler.

Good quality window coverings that fit properly make a huge difference to how comfortable the room will be. You can find out everything you need to know about choosing the right blinds, shutter or curtains, on this page.

A good layout

Placing your furniture in the right position can also help to make sure that everyone feels comfortable when in the room. It is especially important to make sure that seating that is near a heating, or air-conditioning vent can be moved. Some people like to sit in these places, but most do not, so you need to make sure the seating in those parts of the room are mobile. It is also important to make sure that large pieces of furniture do not block the flow of air from heat or cooling sources.

It does not take long to do the above when re-designing a room, and you will be pleased that you took the time to do so.
