Pinata is a container decorated, and filled up with small toys or candy and then broken as part of a ceremony or celebration. Pinata is most commonly associated with Mexico although their origins are considered to be in China. The idea of breaking a container filled with candy and treats came to Europe in the fourteenth century where the name from the Italian pignatta( pot ) was introduced. The Spanish brought the European tradition to Mexico. Today, the pinata is still part of the Mexican culture, the cultures of other countries in Latin America, as well as the USA. But it has mostly lost its religious character.
