Alex Soojung-Kim Pang, a Silicon Valley Consultant, wrote a book on the ill effects of overworking and why resting is important to be more productive. “If you want rest, you have to take it. You have to resist the lure of busyness, make time for rest, take it seriously, and protect it from a world that is intent on stealing it,” he writes in his book.
Well-rested people are often better able to persevere on challenging tasks and handle stressful situations because their system feels 100%. But if you aren’t getting enough sleep, it can be difficult to muster the energy needed to do much more than roll out of bed and shuffle through the day – let alone do it with enthusiasm or purpose.
Get that eight hours of sleep every night, and if you need more than that, listen to your body and take naps when possible. Remember that your body will only respond to you if you are receptive enough towards it first.
Put your goals on paper
Whether you are a business owner, entrepreneur or employee, staying motivated can be a challenge. You may find yourself excited at the beginning of an initiative or goal, but that excitement tends to fade over time.
It is natural to want to give up when things get difficult. But this is exactly when you need to push forward and stay motivated. Sometimes, your greatest enemy is a lack of direction. It is easy to flounder – especially when you have no idea what you are working toward.
In such a case, the first thing you should do is to write down your goals. Because when it is in ink, it is in your sight and you are more motivated to accomplish your goal.
Consider putting your goals where you will see them every day — on the fridge, on your bathroom mirror, or on your bedroom wall. You can also opt for a digital diary or an AI tool as long as you see your goals every day.
Celebrate the little wins
The problem is that we are constantly waiting for the next big thing. Most of us want to win big — we want to hit huge goals and see ourselves on top of our fields. But if that’s all we focus on, the journey doesn’t remain fun and exciting. Ultimately, we burn out because we fail to celebrate our smaller accomplishments along the way.
By celebrating smaller victories, we build momentum and enthusiasm for our work week after week. That helps us stay motivated even when things get tough or when there doesn’t seem an end in sight.
When you accomplish something small, reward yourself in small ways. This will encourage you to keep going so you can reach your next milestone or goal and earn a bigger prize for yourself along the way.
Remind yourself why you do what you do
We all have our reasons why we do what we do — whether it is working on building our business and advancing our careers or just getting through another day, week or month. Whatever the reason that motivates us, remember it and keep it in mind as you move forward today and every day after that.
It all starts by having your “why” figured out. This is something that many people have heard about already, but not everyone actually understands what it means. It is not about finding an idea for a business — it is about figuring out why you want to do this in the first place.
Every day, there are going to be reasons to quit, and if your “why” isn’t strong enough, you will eventually give in to those reasons. The good news is that once you understand your true purpose, you can use it as motivation every single day of the year.
Develop a routine
This is particularly important if you work from home or are self-employed because it is easy to get sidetracked when you are in your comfort zone at home. That’s why it is important to separate your work and personal life. Because although it is okay to have flexible hours, if you don’t have a set routine, it can be hard to get into productivity mode when needed.
Whether it is waking up at the same time every morning or checking your email at certain times during the day (or both), establishing a routine is what will help you stay productive throughout the day.
Besides, having a routine can allow you to take care of your physical needs — especially during a pandemic where our lives feel very out of control because of circumstances beyond our control.
Freshen your workspace up
When you work remotely, it is easy for your home life to affect your work life. Suddenly, your couch becomes your “desk” and before you know it, you are watching Netflix while trying to get some work done.
