Packing & Unpacking Costs When Moving

While not all moving companies charge extra money for packing and unpacking, most of them do. If you are moving to another country, depending on the country you’re moving to, such as Canada, you may have no choice than to ensure in this cost (because of the requirement to vouch for the goods being imported). But if you are moving locally or crossing the states, you can choose if you want to hire professionals for packing, or if you are going to do it yourself. When you are moving there are so many things to do, therefore, hiring a professional packing service might be the way to go. Remember that there are lots of options available too, from packing your entire household, to packing selected belongings only. Let’s see what to expect when movers pack for you:

  1. Home Assessment

First, the company will send out a surveyor to list each item that needs to be packed, including furniture, cupboard contents, and kitchen drawers. This is the way to give an estimate of your move and to determine what belongings in your home may need extra special care. Valuable items, like paperwork, artwork, and jewelry will be discussed during the household survey, to determine how these items should be handled.

  1.               Preparations

Packers will normally start preparations of your flat or house, by protecting your floors and then they will prepare packing material, boxes, tape and other. One person will most likely work in your kitchen while another may start in one of your bedrooms. They will label each box with the room it came from.

The moving company will also provide you with a time estimate on how long it’ll take movers to pack your belongings and the cost involved. The time frame and how much stuff you have will determine the price.

  1.               Full-service packing

Full-service packers will make sure all the furniture you need to move is taken apart, properly wrapped, and secured with padding and protective packing. Pictures and frames will be removed from walls, and carpets will be rolled and ready for your moving day. It is important to understand that packers will never try to determine what is trash and they will pack your home as they find it. Just be sure that all trash and items you do not want or need to move, have been removed from your home before the day of the packing service. Also, make sure your laundry is clean and removed from the washer and dryer, and that your dishwasher is empty.

  1.               Last walkthrough

At the end of the day, you should ensure that everything that needs to be packed has been prepared by the packing team. Do the walkthrough in your home, with your team leader, and open all cupboards, cabinets, closets, and drawers. Look at all the shelves you have in the pantry or closets.

Most packing services can pack an apartment in one day. This saves not only your time and nerves, but the hassle of living with all these boxes. If you need to save money on your move, many packing services offer packing of specialty items: professionals will securely pack up fragile and valuable items, such as glass, paintings, and musical instruments. But remember, full-service movers like will make sure all of your large, unwieldy, or heavy furniture make it to your final destination unbroken too. This includes partial or full disassembly of furniture, as required. After all, you do not need to do all the heavy lifting!
